Why irradiance, not LED count, tells you what a device delivers
Red light has moved from research settings into consumer products. Marketing often leads with LED count because it is easy to compare, but tissue does not count LEDs—it receives energy.
LED count is a component count. Irradiance and energy per session are specifications.
Four variables
Wavelength, exposure time, distance, and power all affect delivery. No single number describes an entire device.
Irradiance is only part of the answer
Irradiance describes intensity at a surface. Total energy also depends on time. A complete comparison requires the measurement conditions, distance, duration, and tolerances.
Five useful questions
- Is wavelength stated?
- Is irradiance published with measurement conditions?
- Is total energy per session published?
- Are tolerances disclosed?
- Is the routine realistic enough to follow?
