Energy fuels everything your body does — building, repairing, and maintaining cells and tissue. Light is one of the ways that energy arrives. Much like plants, human tissue absorbs light and converts it into something usable.
Power matters
Not all red light devices are the same. For red light to do anything at all, it has to deliver enough energy over time — not simply emit a red colour. The measure for that is joules per square centimetre: the total light energy delivered to the body over a session.
A device can look identical to another and deliver a fraction of the energy. From the outside, you cannot tell. That is the whole reason this page exists.
More than meets the eye
Power, energy, and wavelength all decide what a red light device actually delivers. Irradiance — the intensity of the light at the surface — determines how much reaches the body. Joules per cm2 measure the total energy delivered over time. Wavelength defines what kind of light it is in the first place.
Wavelength defines the type of light.
Irradiance defines its strength.
Joules per cm2 define how much energy is delivered.

The research
Light spans a wide spectrum of wavelengths and colours. For decades, researchers have studied a narrow band of red and near-infrared light, and thousands of peer-reviewed papers have been published on it.
The field is active and it is not settled. Outcomes vary by wavelength, dose, tissue, and study design, and reviews in the literature disagree on how much of the effect holds up. Anyone who tells you it is simple is selling something.
The prevailing hypothesis in that literature is that light in this band interacts with mitochondria — the structures inside cells that produce energy. Researchers propose that mitochondria in an excited state release ATP, the molecule cells use as fuel, and nitric oxide, which is involved in blood flow.
Since that mechanism was first described, light energy has been investigated across a range of applications in the published literature. Which of those hold up, and under what conditions, is still being worked out.
Red light therapy is not about switching on a light. It is about the right light, delivered the right way. Wavelength is only the beginning — the dose and the timing decide whether anything is delivered at all.
If any one of these is off, the rest stop mattering. A device that publishes none of them is not being modest.
